APE HANDS
It’s a strange thing to say, but something I designed is bolted into the empire state building, and that’s pretty cool!
I worked on the mechanical design for these hands which are included in an exhibit in the Empire State Building. These hands have linear low frequency transducers for home theaters that shake one of the hands, and have to be robust enough to handle guests climbing on them while vibrating all day long at high amplitude low frequency. The shaking hand is isolated from the building structure with urethane rubber, and is completely serviceable/renewable.
I jump at the opportunity to work on themed entertainment, as it is incredibly rewarding to bring smiles directly to large groups of people’s faces day after day. From scenic, lighting design, working with architects, sculptors, artists and creatives - I love the melting pot of themed entertainment and animatronics. Mechanical engineering and themed entertainment go hand in hand, and mix well with other specialties.
